The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital (HKCH) is a tertiary and quaternary care facility that provides critical care services to children with complex medical or surgical conditions.

Referral criteria

As a specialised unit, our PICU operates on a referral basis and accepts patients that meet one or more of the criteria below:

  1. Children from paediatric units under the Hospital Authority
  2. Children with complex medical or surgical conditions who are under the care of one of the HKCH (sub)specialty services [click here for the referral guidance for each (sub)specialty]
  3. Children in need of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support [subject to meeting specific criteria based on the guidelines of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), and the decision to provide ECMO support will be made following a multidisciplinary team discussion]

In general, our PICU does not admit patients who are:

  1. Directly referred from the private sector, unless arrangement has been made after due discussion with related HKCH (sub)specialty team(s)
  2. On chronic mechanical ventilation
Referral pathway

It is important to note that HKCH does not have an Accident & Emergency Department or provide extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) service for external consultations. Critically ill children in need of immediate resuscitation should be stabilised first before being transferred to HKCH.

For direct communication or urgent consultations, please contact the PICU on-call doctor through the hospital operator (tel: 3513 3888).
