The Hong Kong Children's Hospital is located at the Kai Tak Development Area and commenced operation in late 2018, marking a new milestone in paediatric services in Hong Kong. The hospital's vision is to become a centre of excellence in paediatrics, achieving world-class standards in clinical service, research, training, and patient experience.
The Hong Kong Children's Hospital serves as the tertiary referral centre under the Hospital Authority specialising in the treatment of serious, complex, and rare paediatric cases, providing comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation services for children from birth to 18 years of age. We are the hub of the paediatric service network in Hong Kong, shouldering the mission of enhancing the overall standard of paediatric healthcare. We bring together uncommon cases, experts, and advanced equipment, helping to accumulate clinical experience and standardise treatment protocols. At the same time, strengthening the training of healthcare professionals, promoting research development, and providing a healing environment tailored to the unique needs of child patients.
The Hong Kong Children's Hospital offers comprehensive clinical services covering multiple paediatric sub-specialties, surgical specialties, clinical genetics and various clinical services. Some of the key services are unique in Hong Kong. We are the designated hospital for paediatric heart, kidney, and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and the only paediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and cardiac catheterization centre. We also have the first designated critical care transport team providing efficient and safe inter-hospital transfer for critically ill children.
We have pioneered many firsts including Hong Kong's first gene therapy to treat spinal muscular atrophy. We also performed the youngest-ever heart transplant surgery which was also Hong Kong's first cross-boundary organ donation. We continuously introduce cutting-edge medical technologies to improve treatment outcomes including haploidentical haematopoietic stem cell transplant, ABO-incompatible living donor kidney transplant and CAR-T cell therapy.
The Hong Kong Children's Hospital is the referral centre for rare diseases and a partnering centre of the Hong Kong Genome Project. Our hospital has a Department of Clinical Genetics providing one-stop services for patients of all ages and family members with genetic diseases. To tackle these complex diseases, our hospital is equipped with sophisticated equipment to deliver precise diagnostic testing including massive DNA sequencing to identify the causes of diseases. We are also responsible for the Hospital Authority's Non-invasive Prenatal Testing Programme, Newborn Screening Programme, and operating the Hong Kong Breast Milk Bank—safeguarding the health of the next generation and saving lives.
Many rare and complex diseases affect multiple body systems at the same time and cause various complications. We adopt a multidisciplinary care model with healthcare professionals from different specialties working together to formulate treatment plans collaboratively and journey alongside patient families—offering personalised and comprehensive support. We are actively expanding private services to provide local residents with more quality healthcare choices and leveraging our strengths to handle complex cases from around the world, delivering professional medical services for children in need.
Children-centred and family-friendly care is at our core. Our facilities are specially designed for children—such as a hydrotherapy pool with adjustable water depth to suit their height and low-dose CT scanner. Children can even watch cartoons during MRI scans, do rehabilitation exercises in sunlit gardens, enjoy themselves at the Patient Resource Centre and participate in a wide range of games, music, and art activities. To support parents and caregivers, we provide bedside foldable beds and family overnight rooms. These thoughtful measures not only support the needs of child patients and their families but also help ease their anxiety throughout the treatment journey, so they can feel care and warmth.
In advancing medical breakthroughs, the Hong Kong Children's Hospital spares no effort. We are equipped with various research facilities and closely collaborate with the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong to conduct research on paediatrics and genetic diseases, and participate in international clinical trials.
We are committed to nurturing healthcare professionals and raising their professional standard continuously. We provide clinical training for healthcare professionals to gain hands-on experience, and invite experts from around the world for knowledge exchange and guidance. Our hospital is the clinical teaching site for medical students. The well-equipped Simulation Training Centre offers practical courses for healthcare professionals across Hong Kong to hone their skills.
Looking ahead, the Hong Kong Children's Hospital will continue to strive toward becoming a world-class centre of excellence in paediatrics, upholding the hospital culture of “Learning, Caring, Smiling”, bringing rays of hope to children and families in their battle against illness.
