Hong Kong Children's Hospital Newsletter Issue 8 (April 2018)

Message from HCE

New start, new hope

It has been two years since I took up the role as HKCH’s Hospital Chief Executive. The past few months have been quite emotional for me. After years of meticulous planning, construction of the hospital complex had completed. Colleagues can finally gather under one roof, which should bring about stronger sense of belonging, better communication and higher efficiency. The spacious buildings, scenic gardens and cute animals on the wall also make each work day more enjoyable.

Over the past two years, I have been introducing the hospital’s concepts and services to numerous stakeholders. Now, I have a strong feeling that this is really happening. Our world-class facilities are highly complimented by those who came to visit recently. I am deeply grateful for everyone involved in this extraordinary project. Together, we have built a children-centred and family-friendly hospital for Hong Kong. It’s a dream come true to all paediatricians.

HKCH is scheduled to open from the fourth quarter of 2018. With growing attention and expectations, we should view different opinions and suggestions as motivation to keep enhancing our clinical services, research and training efforts.

To my fellow colleagues, you are all history-makers. Each of you is an important piece in the puzzle of improving the paediatric service for our children. The experience may be tough, but when we look back years later, it would be worthwhile and meaningful. I do wish that you will call HKCH your second home, and let’s join hands in reaching our common goal!

Dr Lee Tsz-leung, HKCH Hospital Chief Executive

HKCH officially established

After over four years of construction, the HKCH complex was officially handed over to HA by the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD) on 1 February. Dr Albert Lo, Cluster Chief Executive of the Kowloon Central Cluster said during the handover ceremony, “Being a member of the KCC, the HKCH will also perform its unique role in coordinating the overall public paediatric service. With the help of the new infrastructure, our healthcare professionals will be able to provide sick children with better service.”

An order to amend the Hospital Authority Ordinance was published in the Gazette by the Government right after to add HKCH to the list of prescribed HA hospitals, marking the official establishment of the HKCH.

Meanwhile, the HKCH commissioning team has moved to the new hospital site in Kai Tak from the temporary offices in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Nurses Quarters and the Yau Ma Tei Specialist Clinic. Colleagues are now working in full gear in their respective professional area, including services and operations planning, procurement, systems testing, recruitment and training, to prepare for the hospital’s opening.

Enhancing communication for the wellbeing of sick children

The HKCH has been maintaining a close connection with different stakeholders. We recently attended meetings of the Legislative Council, the Kowloon City District Council and the HA Kowloon Regional Advisory Committee to update the latest progress and respond to concerns on issues like service commencement arrangements, recruitment, ad transport accessibility. A series of site visits were also arranged to foster exchange.

HKCH to open by phases in Q4 2018

HKCH will serve as the tertiary referral centre for complex, serious and uncommon paediatric cases requiring multidisciplinary management, providing diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for needy patients from birth to 18 years of age territory-wide. It will also pool together expertise to strengthen research and training regarding paediatric and genetic diseases.

HKCH will commence service by phases to ensure patient safety, service quality and operational smoothness. The first phase of service commencement spans from Q4 2018 to Q2 2019. It will begin with specialist outpatient service, followed by the gradual opening of inpatient service.

The hospital has adopted a children-centred and family-friendly design to create a better patient experience. Let’s have a look at special features.

Heroes Behind the Scenes

Doctors and nurses are usually seen as the most direct carers to sick children in a hospital, but outside the spotlight, there are other healthcare professionals who are equally crucial in the patient journey. With love and passion, these individuals have joined HKCH and are participating in training and service planning. They are dedicated to provide the best care to children during their fight against diseases.

One sample, one life

Sue Yeung, Medical Technologist

The job of a Medical Technologist may be seen as monotonous, but Sue Yeung has joined HKCH with great expectations. “The laboratory sample of a child can be ever-changing under the microscope, and varies profoundly from one follow-up investigation to another,” she said.

For Sue, a laboratory result is much more that numbers. It can affect the wellbeing of the whole family. “If genetic disorders could be detected earlier, the child’s condition could be better managed. It could also assist parents in planning for the next pregnancy.”

Sue once encountered a case with inborn errors of metabolism, which the mother was pregnant again. Her team was all worried for the family. “I could fully stand their shoes though we had never met. From the mother’s pregnancy to different development stages of the infant, I promoted myself to work quickly on their samples and look carefully for any abnormality from a bunch of data.” The infant was eventually diagnosed with the same disorder. Fortunately, their early intervention has safeguarded its future development. She said, “I am excited and believe that HKCH will offer me with more opportunities in facing these rare diseases, cutting-edge technologies and research!”

Getting ready for a sharper image

Mong Lau, Radiographer

Although Mong Lau has been a radiographer for ten years, she did not have much experience in performing imaging for children, and almost every occasion was a nightmare. “It was so hard managing crying kids and nervous parents at the same time,” she said. It seems counterintuitive that she has chosen to join the HKCH. She explained, “This children-centred hospital would allow me to devote more time to communicate with patients and their family. When the scanning process is smooth, we can produce better images which facilitate doctors in making accurate diagnosis.”

Mong is now receiving training in two different hospitals and acquiring practical skills on scanning children of different age groups and illnesses. “Children grow so rapidly. For example, the brain structure of an infant can be very different than that of a toddler. Extra knowledge is needed and this is very challenging.”

Mong has also taken up the role as an “interior designer” for the MRI suite equipped with a simulator. “By arranging trials in a playful and safe environment, we wish to ease the children’s anxiety during the real scan. It should help to reach diagnosis more easily so that appropriate treatment can begin sooner,” Mong affirmed.

Putting children’s needs close to heart

Hellen Yang, Occupational Therapist

From developing the paediatric occupational therapy service in AHNH to becoming one of the first occupational therapists in HKCH, Hellen Yang has wholeheartedly devoted to paediatric care. After work, she spends much time looking up reference materials to tackle challenging cases. During weekends, you can often find her in toy stores shopping for training toys.

She shared the story of young girl under her care. Affected by brain cancer with compromised eye sight, the girl had low self-esteem. “I tried to open her heart by talking about her hobbies, and then did some therapeutic arts and crafts. As trust gradually built, she became more proactive in treatment.” Hellen suspected that the girl had underlying learning disorder which prompted her to arrange assessment and discussion with the clinical team. “We arranged a special school placement for her at last. Hearing her cheerful voice during phone follow-up was such an encouragement. Her mother was also grateful for our effort.” Hellen believes that an integrated approach can provide sick children with the best rehabilitation support and promote quality of life.
