A ceremony held on 25 February for Hong Kong Children's Hospital (HKCH) broke both literal and metaphorical ground - marking not only the beginning of HKCH’s construction, but also a new stage in Hong Kong's medical services with the development of the first hospital to focus predominantly on tertiary healthcare for children.
HKCH is going to provide territory-wide service, while it will obtain management and administrative support from Kowloon Central Cluster. HKCH is scheduled to start providing services in phases from 2018. The hospital will offer quality specialty care for referred paediatric patients with complex or rare conditions that require multi-disciplinary management. HA has started working on the paediatric service re-organisation and manpower planning for service commencement in 2018. Examples of services to be provided in the initial phase include oncology, cardiology, nephrology, surgical and intensive care, etc. A crucial element of HKCH’s final ambit is to facilitate medical advancements and innovation by becoming a research and training centre for paediatric medicine.
The development of the hospital has been widely supported by clinicians from all disciplines involved in paediatric care. The pre-construction planning phase included making reference to international experience in the organisation and delivery of paediatric services. HKCH will work closely with the Hospital Authority’s 13 existing paetiatric departments to further strengthen HA’s capacity to provide quality medical services for children.
