Critical Care Transport
Introduction
The HKCH Critical Care Transport (CCT) team is the first designated paediatric and neonatal transport team in Hong Kong. Under the hub-and-spoke model, HKCH is the tertiary referral centre for serious, complex and uncommon cases requiring multi-disciplinary management. Related clinical services such as oncology, cardiology, nephrology, metabolic medicine and neonatal surgery services are centralized at HKCH. Therefore, it is essential to have a safe, efficient and smooth CCT service to transfer patients from regional hospitals to HKCH.
Scope of Services
Our mission is to provide a safe, efficient and timely transport for critically ill neonates and children from the intensive care units (ICUs) of regional public hospitals and ICUs of HKCH. We provide these patients with medical advice, stabilization, and monitoring / management during inter-hospital transport.
As a designated team, our members are specially trained doctors and nurses equipped with the knowledge and skills in providing CCT as well as paediatric and neonatal intensive care. In partnership with the ambulance service of the Fire Services Department, our team can respond to all emergency transport in a timely manner. We also collaborate with ICUs of individual hospitals in Macau and the Mainland to provide cross-border CCT for neonates and children who have been referred to receive complex treatment at HKCH which is not available locally.
In addition, we strive to improve the planning, consistency and standards of care, so as to support the smooth transfer of patients and reduce variations across different hospitals through the following means:
- Developing well-delineated and effective patient referral mechanisms, clinical pathways and transport logistics for CCT service
- Formulating common protocols with regional hospitals on patient stabilization before transport
- Setting up a designated vehicle for delivering the CCT team and medical equipment from HKCH to regional hospitals to provide services
