Cardiothoracic Surgery

Introduction

The Cardiothoracic Surgery team consists of dedicated surgeons, nurse specialists, perfusionists and other healthcare professionals. We provide surgical support for children suffering from congenital and acquired heart diseases, as well as intrathoracic pathologies.

We are the sole provider of complex open heart repairs, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation life support, intrathoracic organ transplant, and ventricular assist device programmes for children in Hong Kong.

Scope of Services

  • Open and closed heart surgery for congenital and acquired heart diseases
  • Neonatal repairs for complex congenital heart conditions, including Norwood operation, arterial switch operation, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection repair, aortic arch and interrupted aorta repairs etc.
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation life support for circulatory and pulmonary diseases
  • Paediatric heart transplantation
  • Mechanical circulatory support
  • Minimally-invasive (mini-thoracotomy and hemi-sternotomy approach) and conventional open repair for simple congenital heart diseases
  • Hybrid surgery / interventional procedures for complex congenital heart conditions in collaboration with Cardiology
  • Postoperative intensive care after cardiac surgery and mechanical circulatory support including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist device, in collaboration with Cardiology and Paediatric Intensive Care teams
  • Thoracic surgery for intrathoracic malignancies
  • Nuss procedure and vacuum bell therapy (in collaboration with occupational therapists) for pectus excavatum
  • Ongoing research and investigation for new surgical innovations
  • Paediatric cardiovascular and thoracic trauma, multidisciplinary advice and management for referring hospitals in collaboration with Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
