Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Introduction

We provide specialist-led intensive and special care support to babies with:

  1. Surgical conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis, bowel obstruction and atresia, abdominal wall defect and diaphragmatic hernia
  2. Complex medical, uncommon or genetic conditions requiring multidisciplinary inputs such as kidney failure, gut failure, metabolic diseases and multiple congenital anomalies

Scope of Services

We provide intensive care beds to support all neonatal surgeries in the territory and offer the most advanced life sustaining support including access to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. In addition, we will have special care beds for babies stabilized after treatment or operation. We can provide a wide range of on-site medical, surgical and anaesthetic subspecialty support to neonates in need.

Since there is no obstetric unit in HKCH, all babies will be transferred from other regional birthing hospitals. We work in close collaboration with other neonatal units in the territory through shared care programmes and regular staff rotation. Our aim is to provide the best service model for sick newborn babies by building a strong network specialised in neonatal intensive care.

We advocate family-centred care and regard parents as our partners to provide care and make decisions in the best interest of the babies. We adopt baby-friendly practices and offer breastfeeding support to mothers who need special help while their babies are under intensive care. The Parents’ Quarters are located next to our unit to facilitate overnight stay of families when needed.

We collaborate with the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong in various clinical and laboratory research projects, aiming to translate the latest knowledge into improved clinical outcomes. We provide teaching for undergraduates and accredited training for doctors in general paediatrics as well as subspecialized training in neonatology.
