Video Transcript

Hi ! My name is Casey. I am a nurse from the operating theatre.

Today I am about to take you on a journey to learn more about your upcoming surgery.

On the Admission Day:
Please arrive on time at the Shroff and Registration Counter on G/F, Tower B, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital for admission registration. Your child must be accompanied by father or mother or a guardian upon admission.

Please bring the following items upon admission.

  1. Admission slip(Please bring the original copy even if the surgery date has been rescheduled by phone. The admission time and ward will remain unchanged.)
  2. Originals of your child’s Birth Certificate or Hong Kong Identity Card (Bring along Immunization Record Card if Birth Certificate is not available.)
  3. The original of HKID card of the parent or guardian who accompanies the child upon admission.
  4. Personal belongings
Examples: towels, slippers, diapers, toothpaste, toothbrush, comfortable casual clothes

Please proceed to Surgical Ward 6N on 6/F, Tower B after registration.

Cold Symptoms: nasal congestion, running nose, cough and fever will have a chance in increasing the risk of general anaesthesia. Once cold symptoms emerge within 2 weeks prior to operation date, please text Ambulatory Surgery Unit during office hours (from 9am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday) at 5741-3358 to inform our healthcare staff. New arrangements may be needed for the surgery.

Fasting is a must before surgery. Food or liquid could come up from the stomach and get into the lungs during anaesthesia. Hence, please fast according to anaesthetist’s instruction. If your child fails to fast, the operation may be cancelled or postponed.

On the Surgery Day:
On the surgery day, your child should wear inpatient clothes. Ward nurse will bring your child and you to the operating theatre. Parents or Guardians can stay with the child in the waiting area while waiting to enter the operating theatre. If allowed, one parent or guardian can accompany the child during induction of anaesthesia in the operating theatre. Before that, please wear the provided purple gown, mask, hat and shoe cover.

After surgery, your child will be closely monitored by nurses in the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit. The nurses will take body temperature of your child, observe breathing rate and heart rate and provide appropriate body warming devices such as fan heater and blanket.

One of the parents or guardian can accompany the child in the Post- Anaesthesia Care Unit. In the meantime, physical assessments will be done by anesthetists to observe if the child is awake with normal body temperature, normal heart rate and stable breathing pattern. Your child will soon be discharged to ward afterwards.

We have also prepared a video showing you the operating theatre journey. Enjoy!
