A social worker and a clown doctor are telling patients a tale.

For children with serious diseases, hospital can be a scary place. Apart from physical pain, they have to endure huge mental stress. Thanks to the generous donation of the Chow Tai Fook Medical Foundation, HKCH was able to set up an extraordinary patient resource centre to support the leisure, socializing, learning and emotional needs of patient families, offering them joy and comfort throughout the treatment process for a better outcome.

▲A plaque unveiling ceremony of the Patient Resource Centre was held on 19th June to acknowledge the Chow Tai Fook Medical Foundation for its substantial donation which covers the centre's renovation, facilities and operating expenses. Officiating guests included Mr Peter Cheng, Chairman of the Foundation and Governors Mr Patrick Tsang, Mr Conrad Cheng, Ms Leonie Ki, Mr Koo Tong-fat; and Hospital Authority Chairman Mr Henry Fan, Director (Strategy & Planning) Dr Ching Wai-kuen, Kowloon Central Cluster Chief Executive Dr Eric Cheung, HKCH Hospital Governing Committee Chairman Mr John Lee, and Hospital Chief Executive Dr Lee Tsz-leung.

A fun and welcoming space

Located on G/F of Tower A, the centre serves outpatients, inpatients and their family members. It is divided into three themed zones:

▲Play Area - a little playground for the young ones to burn some energy.

Nadia: It’s so colourful! So much to play!

Mother: Kids sometimes fall and get hurt when playing in the park. I think it’s safer here because of the soft pads around. It’s more hygienic too.

▲Teenage Lounge - offers digital entertainment including virtual reality and augmented reality games specially designed according to patients' ability.

Yu: I like the germs-fighting game most because I can exercise.

Father: Some patients cannot play in crowded places. It’s good to have a designated area in the hospital for patients to have fun freely.

▲Library and Info Zone - with a library, mini stage, computers and multi-purpose activity space for users to enjoy a relaxing time together and obtain useful resources.

Haley’s mother: The centre has very attractive facilities in different zones which serve the need of different patients.

Diversified activities for the whole family

Many programmes are arranged at the centre, such as storytelling, arts and crafts, performances and workshops, with participation of NGOs and patient groups. Services are also extended to other locations in the hospital. For example, centre staff would visit patients in ward to chat and play games with them, and festivals are always highlighted with gifts and celebration activities.
