Kin-cheung, kidney transplant patient
▲Kin-cheung, HKCH’s first kidney transplant patient, thanks the organ donor for giving him a most precious birthday gift.

Since 16, Kin-cheung had been treated under HKCH Nephrology for his focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Due to kidney failure, his body could not get rid of toxins and excess water properly. In order to survive, he had to get peritoneal dialysis from 7pm every day, which kept him in his room for the whole night.

Fortunately, Kin-cheung received a surprise birthday gift in the beginning of 2021 - a new kidney for transplant.

Right before his birthday, Kin-cheung got a call from the hospital telling him the good news. He said, “I really didn’t see it coming, as I heard other patients had to wait several years for this chance.” After hanging up, he went straight to the hospital and underwent a series of tests.

At the same time, different teams quickly prepared for the big operation - Nephrology coordinated the logistics, urologists made surgical plans, Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine arranged manpower and surgical instruments, Radiology performed ultrasound scan, and PICU reserved a bed for post-op care. On the night of his birthday, Kin-cheung was sent to the operating theatre, and became the first kidney transplant patient of HKCH.

The operation went smoothly, and Kin-cheung has recovered well. Thanks to this new kidney, he is no longer tied to the dialysis machine. Now he only needs to take immunosuppressants and attend follow-up appointment regularly. He can spend more time with his family and friends, and has started playing basketball again. His appetite has also improved. This teenager certainly looks more energetic than before.

Kin-cheung is grateful for the new life given to him. He thanks the organ donor and family for their selflessness, and the healthcare staff who have taken good care of him. He aspires to work in the hospital laboratory to help other patients in need and pass on the blessing.
