Flat feet in children

Paediatric flat feet refers to the collapse of medial arch of a child’s feet. Most children will outgrow flat feet without intervention. However, if children have symptoms such as foot fatigue, unsteadiness when walking and soreness, medical advice should be sought. Foot orthoses like insoles are commonly used to relieve flat feet symptoms. Prosthetist-orthotists will prescribe appropriate foot orthoses based on clinical assessment, and a pair of supportive shoes can enhance the function of foot orthoses.

How to choose the right footwear
- The size and shape should fit the length, width and thickness of the feet
- Leave some space for the removable insole / splint if needed
- With shoelaces or devices to adjust tightness
- Material of the heel counter and shoe waist should not be too soft
- With shock absorbing and cushioning soles
Muscles strengthening and stretching exercises
Tip-toe standing
Stand with feet apart as shoulder width. Raise the heels slowly and hold for 5-10 seconds. Repeat 10-15 times in the morning and evening.

Marble pickup
Use the left and right foot alternately to pick up a marble with your toes. Put it into and out of a container repeatedly. The fastest person to complete the specific repetitions wins.

Calf stretching
Feet apart as shoulder width. Hands on wall and keep back straight. Bend the front knee and straighten the back leg with toes pointing forward and heels on ground. Slowly press down until calf muscles tightened. Hold for 10-15 seconds. Alternate left and right side. Repeat 15-20 times in the morning and evening.
