Neurology
Introduction
We provide diagnostic and therapeutic service for children with neurological disorders within HKCH. We also receive consultation referrals from other paediatric specialists outside HKCH for children with epilepsy including drug resistant epilepsy or neuro-metabolic / neurodegenerative diseases / movement disorders or rare neuromuscular diseases.
Our comprehensive neurology service is supported by a broad spectrum of professionals including paediatric neurologists, developmental-behavioural paediatricians, other specialists, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals. In addition, our Electrophysiology Unit is well equipped to provide neuro-diagnostic tests such as video-electroencephalogram, nerve conduction study, electromyogram and evoked potentials.

- To enhance professional and academic expertise through ongoing training, service development and scientific research
- To collaborate with community partners in providing education and arranging mutual support to patients and families
Scope of Services
Besides providing neurological support to children from various specialties within HKCH, we also serve children aged 19 years with complicated neurological diseases in in-patient and out-patient settings referred from other paediatric specialists outside HKCH. Our service covers a wide spectrum of paediatric neurological conditions including the following:
- Suspected neurometabolic / neurodegenerative diseases / movement disorders with unexplained encephalopathy, epilepsy, leukodystrophies, movement disorders, multisystem involvement affecting various organs (e.g. liver, heart), neurological regression (motor, cognitive, sensory), rhabdomyolysis, spasticity and stroke or stroke-like episodes
- Epilepsy including refractory epilepsy
- Fair seizure control that warrants further workup of underlying etiologies
- Seizures which are suitable for further drug trial or non-pharmacological treatment options
- Rare neuromuscular diseases, including undiagnosed neuromuscular disorders and specific neuromuscular conditions that are eligible to the recruitment of clinical trial or research study
