Pathology

Introduction
The Department of Pathology is led by specialist pathologists. Other members of our dedicated team include scientific officers, medical technologists, bioinformaticians, clerical and supporting staff. We strive to deliver the best pathology service to children. Our services continue to grow to align with the development of clinical services of the hospital.
Scope of Services
Our comprehensive service scope covers both rare and common disorders of inherited or acquired origin and childhood cancers.
A wide spectrum of investigations ranging from standard pathology tests to highly complex laboratory assays is provided by divisions of anatomical pathology, haematology, chemical pathology, clinical microbiology and infection, and genetic and genomic pathology.
Timely and accurate laboratory results are essential for the diagnosis, prognostication, treatment and monitoring of patients' diseases.
The Department also houses the newborn screening programme for inborn errors of metabolism, severe combined immunodeficiency and spinal muscular atrophy which allows early diagnosis and proper management of affected children. The programme benefits babies born in public hospitals, and will be gradually expanded to babies born in private hospitals.
- For those delivering in public hospitals, please consult the healthcare staff in your respective hospital, or click here for general information about the programme.
- For related private hospitals, please click here for the test information provided by the Newborn Screening Laboratory.
In addition, we operate a non-invasive prenatal screening service for common foetal chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome, to facilitate pregnant women receiving public hospital service to make an informed decision on reproduction.
