體外膜氧合器支援

The Hong Kong Children’s Hospital is the only designated paediatric ECMO centre in Hong Kong. It is also a member centre of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO centre 1064). In general, we accept referral from the paediatric and neonatal ICU of all public hospitals. Patients from the private sector will be considered case-by-case depending on their indication, as they may require initial stabilization at a regional hospital with Accident & Emergency Department and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Patients will be considered as a candidate for ECMO if there is no absolute contraindication (e.g. irreversible severe neurological damage or incurable malignancy) while the clinical condition of the lungs / heart / circulatory failure fulfills certain predefined criteria to justify ECMO support. Our ECMO team welcomes early discussion regarding potential ECMO candidates from other units, as patients may become too ill for inter-hospital transfer later on.

At the moment, HKCH does not provide ECMO retrieval service from another hospital.

Referral Pathway

Please contact the relevant on-call doctor and specify it is for ECMO consultation.

After receiving the request, a multi-disciplinary discussion will be activated. When a consensus has been reached, reply will be given to the referring paediatrician as soon as possible.
