Disease category Eligibility for referral to the Hong Kong Children's Hospital
(Age: < 19 years old)
Epilepsy and seizure disorders Our clinic provides comprehensive assessment and care for children with uncommon, refractory or complex seizure disorders.
  • Seizure disorder with diagnostic challenge
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Management of refractory epilepsy (failure of sustained seizure control despite adequate trials of two or more appropriately selected, titrated and tolerated anti-seizure medications)
  • Cases that warrant further workup of underlying etiologies (particularly in the presence of progressive cognitive or motor decline / regression of developmental milestones)
  • Epileptic disorder which is potentially amendable by surgery (e.g. stereotypic lateralized seizure)
  • Selected patients suitable for further drug trial or trial of new therapy, non-pharmacological treatment options such as dietary treatment or other surgical intervention (e.g. vagal nerve stimulation)
Neurometabolic / neurodegenerative diseases / movement disorders Our neurometabolic clinic provides comprehensive assessment and care for children with suspected or confirmed neurometabolic, neurodegenerative and movement disorders, and for recruitment to clinical trials or clinical studies if available.
Suspected neurometabolic / neurodegenerative diseases with unexplained -
  • encephalopathy
  • epilepsy especially intractable seizures
  • leukodystrophies
  • movement disorders
  • multisystem involvement affecting various organs (e.g. liver, heart)
  • neurological regression (motor, cognitive, sensory)
  • rhabdomyolysis
  • spasticity
  • strokes or stroke-like episodes
Confirmed neurometabolic / neurodegenerative diseases with management difficulties that do not require strict dietary management except ketogenic / high fat diet
Neuromuscular disorders The Neuromuscular Disorder Clinic provides comprehensive assessment and care for children with rare and common neuromuscular diseases with diagnostic challenge, or require specialised treatments, and for recruitment to clinical trials or clinical studies.

In our Neuromuscular Disorder Clinic, we closely work with the multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive management plan and tie research studies aiming to advance and provide better care for children and their families.

  • Outpatient referrals can be submitted to the HKCH Specialist Outpatient Clinic by the patient via HA Go app, email (hkchsopcbooking@ha.org.hk), or fax (3512 7579).
