Referral Mechanism – General Principles
- All newly diagnosed or suspected paediatric cancer cases can be referred to the Hong Kong Children's Hospital (HKCH)
- All complicated newly diagnosed paediatric haematology cases can be referred to HKCH
- For patients with unstable condition, they can be stabilized at regional hospital first before being referred to HKCH; HKCH specialists will provide on-site consultation if needed
- Thalassemia and haemophilia patients on regular replacement therapy can receive their treatment at regional hospitals but attend specialist clinic at HKCH every 6 to 12 months for comprehensive review and assessment

Common haematology cases that can be managed in regional hospitals:
- Acute or newly diagnosed diagnosed immune thrombocytopenic purpura
- Mild von Willebrand's disease
- Chronic benign neutropenia
- Fe deficiency anemia
- Non-transfusion dependent thalassemia

Chronic illnesses of other organ systems with associated haematological manifestations such as:
- Metabolic disorders
- Endocrine problems
- Gastro-intestinal problems
- Rheumatology illnesses

Neonatal haematological problems with known transient underlying causes |
Diseases for Referral to Paediatric Haematology & Oncology Service at the HKCH
All suspected or confirmed cancers in children |
Including benign brain tumor such as craniopharyngioma, and Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis |
Inherited or chronic blood diseases in children |

Newly diagnosed thalassemia major and haemophilia can be initially managed at HKCH, and then managed at regional hospitals by share-care approach (case by case discussion)
- Haemophilia with inhibitors managed at HKCH
- Old cases will have annual surveillance follow-up at HKCH
- Bone marrow failure syndromes (e.g. aplastic anemia, Fanconi anemia, PNH)
- Hereditary thrombotic conditions (e.g. protein C, S def.)

Cancer predisposing syndromes requiring surveillance follow-up |
- Known patients or children with 1st degree family members who are screened positive to have germline cancer predisposing gene

Patients requiring bone marrow transplant (haematopoietic transplant) as definitive treatment |
- Either malignant or non-malignant conditions when such procedure is indicated

Referral Pathway
- For urgent consultations, please contact the on-call doctor for “Haematology / Oncology” through the hospital operator (tel: 3513 3888), and fax the referral letter to the ward or as specified by the on-call doctor
- For non-urgent consultations, the patient could send the referral letter to the HKCH Specialist Outpatient Clinic via HA Go app, email hkchsopcbooking@ha.org.hk, or fax (3512 7579).
